How should I clean my teeth during orthodontic treatment?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is critically important during orthodontic treatment. Poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment may lead to white spot lesions, dental decays, gingivitis, periodontitis or tooth loss.

Orthodontic braces and wires tend to trap more food and also make brushing and flossing more difficult. Therefore, patient needs to spend 2x to 4x as long brushing and flossing their teeth in order to maintain their oral hygiene condition.

Often, during orthodontic treatment, patient will need additional oral hygiene aids to keep their teeth clean. These additional aids may include interproximal brush, water pick, ultrasonic tooth brush, perio aid, fluoride rinse, concentrated fluoride paste, and chlorhexidine rinse.
