2Q6. Why does my child need to wear headgear/facemask?

Why do my child need to wear headgear? facemask?

Depending on design, headgear can serve several different functions.

  1. Maintaining back teeth position while retracting front teeth back.
  2. Move back teeth back.
  3. Keep back teeth from extruding
  4. Prevent forward growth of maxilla

While the first three functions can be substituted with TAD, a more convenient device, there are currently no good substitution for head gear for the 4th function.

Reverse pull facemask serves to promote mid face growth by disarticulating the various sutures around the mid-face bone. Currently there are no simpler device that can substitute for reverse pull facemask.
