2Q3. Finishing Treatment

Finishing active orthodontic treatment

Patient cooperation is important throughout orthodontic treatment. But cooperation is especially important during the last 2 to 3 months of the active treatment. Orthodontist may ask the patient to do one of the following during the last stage of the treatment:

1. Orthodontist may take out the wire from the upper or lower back teeth and ask patient to wear inter-jaw rubber band full time for 2 weeks.

2. Orthodontist may take off the braces and have patient wear a positioner(a rubber appliance that patient bite into) full time for two days followed by nightly wear for 2 weeks.

3. Orthodontist may have patient do combination of step1 and step 2.

If the above steps are followed closely, this could easily reduce the treatment time by 3 months. At the end of the active treatment, final record will be taken and one of the following retainer will be given to the patient:

  1. Fixed retainer
  2. Removable retainer
    • Standard Hawley
    • Wraparound Hawley
    • Essix retainer
  1. Bionator or other removable functional appliance
  2. Continuing use of positioner

The type of retainer given depend on patient’s initial malocclusion, patient’s growth stage, patient's current occlusion, and patient's preference.
